Summer is a time for fun in the sun, but it can also be tough on your hair. The combination of heat, humidity and exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays can lead to dry, frizzy, faded and damaged hair. Here in New Zealand, the sun’s effects are particularly harsh. To maintain healthy, beautiful hair this summer, it’s important to take steps and step up your hair regime to prevent and repair summer hair damage. Rodney Wayne education and creative director Newton Cook shares his expert tips on how to keep your hair looking sensational all summer long.
SUN PROTECTION FOR YOUR HAIR
The sun can be harmful to hair because it can cause damage to the hair strands, leading to dryness, brittleness, and breakage. The sun’s rays can also strip hair of its natural oils, leaving it feeling dry and lifeless. Additionally, the sun can fade the tone of coloured hair, making it appear dull and faded. Newton says, “It’s important to protect your hair from the sun, especially during the summer months, by wearing a hat and by including hair products with UV protection in your regimen. If you have blonde hair Newton recommends using a purple shampoo. “My go-to is Matrix So Silver Purple Shampoo. It eliminates dull, yellow tones and illuminates highlights on blondes. And it adds a beautiful brightness to grey or white hair.

PREVENT HAIR DAMAGE WHILE SWIMMING
For many of us, summer means time in the water. Swimming can damage hair because the chemicals in pool water and the saltwater in the ocean can damage hair. Chlorine can be especially damaging, causing hair to become brittle and prone to breakage, and it can also alter the natural colour of your hair. To protect your hair while swimming use a leave-in moisturising conditioner or treatment. Newton suggests choosing the treatment that’s best for your hair type. “I have a range of options that I recommend to my clients, I particularly like Kérastase Elixir Ultime, Redken One United Spray, or the multi-benefit Colour Fanatic Spray from Pureology. Using these 20 minutes before any swim or even before you leave the house each day will help make that refreshing dip feel even more fantastic!”
PROTECT HAIR FROM HUMIDITY
Summer in New Zealand often brings tropical-style humidity. Humidity can damage hair by causing it to become frizzy and unmanageable. When the air is humid, the hair absorbs moisture from the air and expands, leading to frizz and flyaways.
