In Conversation with Newton Cook Creative Director, Rodney Wayne

Creative energy, leadership, and a passion for people that’s what defines Newton Cook, Creative Director at Rodney Wayne. From his early days as a stylist to leading national education and creative direction, Newton’s journey reflects both personal growth and the strength of a brand built on excellence and opportunity.

Can you describe your role within the franchise and what a typical day looks like for you?

“I wouldn’t say I have a typical day, but I do have a typical week,” Newton laughs.
“I usually have two full office days where I catch up on emails, meet with our office team, plan upcoming visits, and meet with brand partners to discuss education and future sessions.

The rest of the week I spend on the road visiting salons, making sure our teams have their education and training sorted, supporting teams and managers, attending upskilling sessions, and working with models and influencers.”

What originally attracted you to work with Rodney Wayne, and what has kept you here?

“Growing up, Rodney Wayne was always a household name with an outstanding reputation. It was the go-to place for beautiful hair and for helping people look and feel amazing.

I’ve stayed because I believe we still hold that position. From being a client in the chair, to a stylist behind the chair, and now as Creative Director, I’ve seen this brand from every angle. One of our core brand values that I truly believe in is helping people reach their true potential.”

What do you enjoy most about your role, and what gives you the most satisfaction day to day?

“I love that no two days are the same and that there are so many aspects to my role that keep it interesting. Some days I’m hands-on, and other days I’m working behind the scenes.

The most satisfying part is seeing the results of my work watching a project I’ve been part of come to life, seeing a team member thrive after training, and being part of such an amazing brand.”

What skills or qualities do you think are essential for someone to thrive in your role or in this industry?

“The ability to listen is always number one for me. You also need to be flexible, adaptable, resilient, and open to learning. Being able to wear different hats is key in this industry.”

What has been one of your proudest moments or achievements since joining the team?

“Since being in this role, the brand has won multiple national awards including Remix Salon of the Year. My proudest personal moment was winning Viva NZ Stylist of the Year in 2024.”

How would you describe the culture and values of the Rodney Wayne franchise from your perspective?

“I believe the culture of any team starts from the top, and we have a strong and fair leader who keeps us accountable and focused while making sure we have fun along the way. The Rodney Wayne values are something I’ve always believed in because they apply to everyone both clients and team members.”

What kind of support or growth opportunities have you experienced working with Rodney Wayne?

“It was recognised quite early in my career that I had the potential to grow. Throughout high school I was a student leader, and in every job I’ve had I’ve always moved up quickly, so for that to be recognised within an established brand like Rodney Wayne was no small feat.

I’ve taken part in multiple upskilling courses to improve my communication, identify growth opportunities within team members and salons, and strengthen my leadership through the Rodney Wayne system.

I’ve also had exposure to global trends through our brand partnerships and have been able to elevate my profile as an industry leader.”

When things get tough, what motivates you or helps you reset and stay passionate about your work?

“My motivation comes from a few different places downtime with friends and family, training, and listening to music always helps me reset.

When I need inspiration, I turn to music, social media, current shows, and people I look up to. I remember once telling my boss and mentor Julie that I was lacking motivation, and together we looked at upcoming shows, events, and education sessions that could reignite my inspiration and we made it happen.”

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking about joining the franchise, either as a team member or as a business owner?

“Do it. Reach out to me or one of our Support Office team members and let’s talk about it together.”

And finally, what is something unique or surprising that people might not know about your role or the salon environment?

“A salon environment is one of the most fun and rewarding places to work. There are many different career paths floor manager, front desk manager, receptionist, retail assistant, stylist, salon trainer, and apprentice.

The skills you learn can set you up for life. Whether it’s short-term or long-term, there’s a place for everyone, and it’s a career that can take you all over the world if you want it to.”
