Best Dry Hair Treatments & Expert Tips for Dry Hair Repair

Dry Hair treatments

Does your hair feel brittle, tangle easily and lack natural shine? If you answered yes, then it’s likely you have dry or damaged hair. Dry hair is a common problem. It can be caused by a range of reasons such as weather, the environment, pollution, exposure to chlorinated or salty water and other damaging stressors. Dry hair can even be hereditary. All these factors can contribute to your hair lacking moisture and becoming brittle, dull and dry. To help address your hair concerns, we asked Rodney Wayne education and creative director Newton Cook for his top tips. The good news is that whatever its cause, you can use this advice to get your strands looking glossy and feeling silky soft and healthy again.

WHAT IS DRY HAIR?

“Dry hair is when your hair is not retaining enough moisture or is not getting the moisture it needs,” says Newton. “It can also occur when your scalp doesn’t make enough oil to moisturise your locks. Some people find this becomes more evident at different times throughout the year.”

HEAT PROTECTION FOR DRY HAIR

To remedy your dry hair concerns, begin by eliminating one of the main causes. Newton advises, “Avoid excessive heat and take care with heat styling tools. Use a tool that’s not risking irreversible damage.

“My favourite heat styling range is by ghd. All ghd tools are set at a temperature that’s safest for the hair and not going to cause damage. The L’Oréal Steampod is also a fave. It has the added benefit of infusing the strands of your hair with the moisture it’s thirsty for.

“It’s important to use a heat protection product before blow drying and heat styling, Some people think that using a blow-dry cream is enough to protect their hair from the blow dryer as well as the styling tool. But it’s probably not giving your tresses enough protection because blowdry gels and creams aren’t designed for the heat that you would experience from a styling tool. “My go-to blow dry protector is Redken Big BlowOut. It provides natural shine and nourishment for all hair types. When heat styling, I recommend Redken Iron Shape.”

Professional quality targeted treatments are your best ally in restoring dry hair to its healthy, shiny best. Newton adds, “Ensuring you are prescribed the correct hair care regimen is so vital.”

DRY HAIR TREATMENT FOR COLOURED HAIR

“Your hair could be dry as a result of having your hair coloured or lightened – which would mean you’d need a shampoo and conditioner with protein and moisture to help strengthen and soften the hair. My recommendation for coloured hair is Pureology Strength Cure Shampoo and Conditioner. I find they rebuild damaged hair, without compromising your colour”

DRY HAIR TREATMENT FOR FINE TO NORMAL HAIR

“If your hair is simply just lacking moisture then my favourite shampoo and conditioner for dry hair is Kérastase Bain Magistral paired with the Kérastase Nutritive Masque, it makes your hair feel so soft. Leave the masque on for a minimum of 5 minutes and apply onto towel-dried hair for maximum benefits.”

DRY HAIR CARE FOR THICK HAIR

“If your hair is on the thicker side and feeling dry, then I would go for Kérastase Bain Satin 2 and follow with Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense which delivers extra concentrated nutrients and moisture so also helps with thick frizzy hair as well which is a bonus!”

DRY HAIR SHAMPOO AND CLEANSING

Professional quality targeted treatments are your best ally in restoring dry strands to their healthy, shiny best. Newton adds, “Ensuring you are prescribed the correct home hair care regimen is important. There’s no special rule about how often you should be cleansing your hair, as everyone is different, but we don’t recommend using shampoo on your hair every day. On average 1-2 times a week is a sufficient number of times for someone to be shampooing their hair.”
